The addition of a deoxidiser
to carat gold alloys
inhibits the formation of surface base metal oxides during melting
and casting. Zinc and silicon are typical deoxidisers,
added in small, controlled amounts in the form of master alloys with copper and
result in a clean, bright, metallic surface.
