The Double Eagle was the
$20 legal tender gold
coin, minted in the United States from 1849 until 1933. The coin was 900 fine,
with a fine gold content of 0.9675 troy
ounces.

Like the smaller $10 Eagle, the Double Eagle was initially minted with
a Liberty head on the face but from 1907 until 1933, this was replaced with
the figure of St. Gaudens. The coins usually trade now at a premium
and some of the coins, from years in which few were minted, are collectors’
items.
