The single European currency launched on 1 January 1999 by the European Central Bank (ECB). The founder nations initially participating were Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain. Greece joined in January 2001. New notes and coins replaced national currencies from January 2002.
