According to IMF data, the
official reserves of central banks contained
just under 29,600 tonnes (952 million oz) of gold at the end of 2001 while a further
3,400 tonnes (110 million oz) was held by such multilateral agencies as the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Bank
for International Settlements (BIS).
