Granulation

The decoration of the surface of gold jewellery with small granules of gold by welding or soldering, a technique first perfected by the Etruscans by the seventh century BC. While still practised manually by goldsmiths, recent developments enable granulation through use of laser welding for mass manufacture of jewellery.
