Hydraulic Mining

A surface mining method, often in alluvial deposits or on old dumps, using high pressure water hoses to remove unconsolidated ore, consisting of sand, gravel and small boulders. Used in the later stages of the Californian gold rush and extensively employed today in some South American gold fields, notably on the rivers in Colombia and Venezuela causing considerable environmental damage.
