For some mints
the production of proof issues of bullion
coins or other well known coins, such
as the Sovereign, or of special limited issues,
is an important part of their gold coin output. At the Royal Mint in Britain,
for example, the minting of what are called ‘modern collector coins’ is the biggest
part of the mint’s gold business. These coins, quite distinct from historical
numismatic coins, are often sold by direct
mail or advertising in coin magazines to collectors’ clubs. The
Royal Mint’s regular modern collector coin output covers proof issues of the Britannia
bullion coin, the Sovereign and special issues. Other mints with regular output
of modern collector coins include Gold Corporation, the Royal Canadian Mint, the
Singapore Mint, the South African Mint and the United States Mint.
