The coin is also available
in half, quarter and one-tenth of an ounce sizes. Originally
about 300,000 were produced each year, of which two-thirds were sold in the
United States where a collectors’ market for the coin has been established.
However, by 2001 sales had fallen to approximately 90,000 ounces.
Panda
Chinese one ounce
gold coin (not strictly speaking a
bullion coin) of 999.9 quality made by
the China Mint Company in Beijing, sold on a low premium
and first launched in 1982. The design of the Panda is changed annually and all
are made to half proof quality.
