Panda

Chinese one ounce gold coin (not strictly speaking a bullion coin) of 999.9 quality made by the China Mint Company in Beijing, sold on a low premium and first launched in 1982. The design of the Panda is changed annually and all are made to half proof quality.

The coin is also available in half, quarter and one-tenth of an ounce sizes. Originally about 300,000 were produced each year, of which two-thirds were sold in the United States where a collectors’ market for the coin has been established. However, by 2001 sales had fallen to approximately 90,000 ounces.
