Spangold
A range
of 18 and 23 pink and yellow carat gold
jewellery alloys containing copper and aluminium
that exhibit a novel ‘spangle’ surface after heat treatment, developed by Mintek,
Randburg, South Africa . The spangle effect results from a reversible martensitic
transformation of the crystal structure, causing a rumpling of the surface.
This mechanism is commonly known as the ‘shape memory effect’.
