Company Description

• Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is one of the world's largest, lowest-cost producers of copper and gold, through its 85.9% owned subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI), which operates the Grasberg open-pit/underground property in Irian Jaya. Rio Tinto has a direct 16.6% shareholding in FCX and participates at 40% in the Grasberg expansion scheme.
• Freeport's share of contained metal production during the year 2001 was over 2.6 million oz, an increase year-on-year of over 735,000 oz, or roughly 40%. The increase can largely be accounted for by higher grades at the mine.
