European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD)

The EBRD was established in London in 1991. It exists to foster the transition towards open market-oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in the countries of central and eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It is committed to applying the principles of multiparty democracy, pluralism and market economics, and has been involved with several gold mining projects, including Newmont Mining's joint venture with the government of Uzbekistan to recover gold from low grade stocks at Muruntau; the Kubaka project in Russia; and the Kumtor gold mine in Kyrgyzstan.
