South African mining house founded in 1933 by A. S. Hersov and S. G. (Slip) Menell. Opened up the famous Hartebeestfontein (Harties) at Klerksdorp in 1955 (this mine now owned by Durban Deep). Over time Anglovaal became a diversified mining and industrial group. In 1996 its gold and other mining interests were restructured as Avmin.
