Argor Heraeus SA

The Argor refinery was originally established in Chiasso, Switzerland in 1951 and was taken over by Union Bank of Switzerland in 1973. A new partnership was agreed in 1986 with Heraeus Holding GmbH of Hanau, Germany, with UBS having 75% participation. In 1988 Argor-Heraeus moved to a new refinery at Mendrisio with facilities for refining gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and the production of bars, wafers, coins, medals and semi-finished products. In 1998, Union Bank of Switzerland withdrew its holding in the refinery. Heraeus retained a 35% share and Commerzbank International took a 35% holding.
