Australia's oldest operating mint was established in Perth, Western Australia,
in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint to refine
the gold from the State's eastern goldfields. Between 1899 and 1931, it minted
106 million Sovereigns
and 735,000 Half-Sovereigns carrying the distinctive "P" mintmark. It remained
a branch of the Royal Mint until 1970, when control passed to the Government of
the State of Western Australian.
The Mint is now the centre of the Australian International Precious Metals Coin
Programme, consisting of the Nugget
and Lunar gold coins, Koala platinum coins, Emu palladium coin and the Kookaburra
silver coins, marketed through GoldCorp
Australia. It also makes special issues, such as Sydney 2000 Olympic
coins.
It also refines more than half of Australia's annual gold production, through
Australian Gold Refineries (AGR), offers high-quality analytical services through
AGR Analytical Services and produces and markets semi-fabricated
precious
metals products through its AGR Industrial Products Division. It produces
a full range of cast bars of varying purity, including kilobars and ten tola bars,
which are accredited by the London Bullion
Market Association and the Tokyo
and New York Commodity Exchanges.
