| South Africa - Rand Refinery |
The Rand Refinery opened in 1921 to refine South Africa's gold, which had previously
been refined in London. The refinery,
which was rebuilt in the late 1980s, is the world's largest and has refined
over 40,000 tonnes (1,286 million oz) in its history, about 30% of all gold
ever mined.

In 1993 the Rand Refinery became an independent company from the South African Chamber of Mines. Since 1997, when South African gold mining companies gained the right to market their output instead of its being sold through the Reserve Bank, the refinery is also authorised to act as an agent in the sale of newly mined gold. It offers a gold dealing service.

Grain and semi-fabricated
products for the jewellery industry are
also produced by Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery produces:
A wide range of gold bars from the 400 ounce London good delivery bars to kilo bars, ten tola bars and tael bars.
